Miami/Florida's first 5-week WORKSHOP in FRESCO Painting
will be led by University of Miami Design and Drawing Professors
Najeeb Campbell and José Grave de Peralta
in collaboration with the
Academy of ARTS & Minds (please CLICK)
Coconut Grove, Florida
Date: May 30 - July 6, 2006 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
- Weeks I-II : Art history of the art of Fresco in A & M School studio
Practice with FRESCO techniques on small tile in studio
Visit of Miami Design District future fresco location
Documentation of fresco site
Creation of stencil in studio for transfer to site walls, etc.
- Weeks III-V : Arricio: rough preparation of site walls and ceiling
Intonaco: execution of final coat on walls and celing
This unique event will be documented by a professional filmmaker. Each student
will receive a DVD or VHS record of the entire building process.

Registration requirements & Course costs
- $1,500 per student (check or cash)
- Payable in full by Tuesday, May 24th
- Includes preliminary classes in FRESCO history, design, and
individual, hands-on, painting instruction one-on-one
- Also included in tuition costs are full use of scaffolding, lights, and
other major equipment, such as trowels, plastering knives, paint trays
- Putty lime, sand, water for the plastering process will also be provided
- Powdered color pigments will be provided as well
Materials required (responsibility of each of the participants)
- goggles, disposable dust-mask, old froc or shirts
- basic watercolor and w/c brush set; small pad of w/c paper
- fresco painting brushes (long-handled ROUND and FLAT sable brush
for fine lines; special limewash brush)
- two 24"- square keystone tiles for painting "practice" FRESCO images

Prof. José Grave de Peralta
Prof. Najeeb Campbell
focusing on sociological and economic
progress through urban development and
revitalization in South Africa, Jamaica, and
here in South Florida: Professor Campbell,
in addition to teaching design studio at the
university of Miami School of Architecture,
is principal of Ocean Studios, a
multi-faceted firm, which practices
Architectural and Urban Design,
Filmmaking, and Fine Art.tHe has
participated in unique projects focusing on
sociological and economic progress
through urban development and
revitalization in South Africa, Jamaica, and
here in South Florida. Professor Campbell,
in addition to teaching design studio at the
University of Miami School of
Architecture, is principal of Ocean Studios,
a multi-faceted firm, which practices
Architectural and Urban Design,
Filmmaking, and Fine Art.

a native of Jamaica,
received his Bachelor of
Architecture as well as
his Master’s degree in
Town Planning from the
University of Miami
School of Architecture.
He has participated in
unique projects
a professor of architectural and
freehand drawing at the University of
Miami/School of Architecture in Coral
Gables, Florida. A graduate of St. John’
s College in Annapolis, Maryland,
famous for its “Great Books” classical
liberal arts curriculum, Peralta also
holds a master’s degree in art and
Spanish literature from the University
of Delaware in Newark. His visual
subjects include seascapes, human
figures, and mythological themes.
Working in traditional mediums such
as pencil, pastel, pen & ink,
watercolor, oil, acrylic, and egg
tempera, he has also studied and
teaches the traditional FRESCO
technique. This artist's work has been
exhibited in parts of the United States,
Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, and
Kuwait. Private corporate collectors of
his canvases and murals include
Meland, Russin, Hellinger & Budwick,
P.A., in Miami’s WACHOVIA Tower;
Motorola-Nortel in Venezuela; and
Emilio and Gloria Estefan. In May
2002, Peralta designed the University
of Miami’s large exhibit space for
CubaNostalgia, a yearly fair of Cuban
memorabilia and culture held at the
Coconut Grove Convention Center. In
May of the same year, he led a group
of university students to Florence,
Italy, to study fresco painting, history,
and restoration techniques at the
Spinelli Institute.
